Field Notes: The Reactions I’ll Never Get Tired of Seeing While Drawing Live Guest Portraits
People often ask me what my favourite part of offering live guest portraits at weddings is.
It’s not actually the drawing.
Of course, I love the process of sketching each guest, mixing colours, and watching every portrait come together. But if I had to choose my favourite moment, it would be the few seconds after I hand someone their finished portrait.
That reaction is different every single time.
“I’ve never received something like this before.”
This is probably the sentence I hear most often throughout a wedding.
Some guests smile quietly as they study the artwork. Others laugh because they’ve never seen themselves illustrated before. A few immediately call over their partner or family members to show them the portrait. It’s always fascinating to watch. I think part of the surprise comes from the fact that they weren’t expecting to leave a wedding with something created just for them. The portrait isn’t printed or mass-produced. It’s hand-drawn during the celebration, one guest at a time.
That personal touch makes all the difference.
The crowd that naturally gathers
Something I’ve noticed over the years is that our live art table almost always becomes a little gathering spot. Guests stop by out of curiosity, watch a portrait slowly appear on paper, and before long they’re pointing out friends, taking videos, or waiting to see who’ll be next. Some stay for just a minute. Others end up watching several portraits being completed before collecting their own.
I love these moments because they create conversations between guests who may not have met before. The artwork becomes more than a wedding favour, it becomes part of the celebration itself.
My favourite reactions are often the quiet ones
Not every reaction is loud.
Sometimes a guest simply pauses for a moment before smiling and saying, “This really looks like me.”
Others carefully slip their portrait back into its protective sleeve as though they’re already planning where it’ll go once they get home.
Those quieter moments stay with me just as much as the excited ones.
They remind me that something small can still feel incredibly meaningful.
A wedding favour that continues beyond the wedding
One thing couples often tell me after the wedding is that their guests still have their portraits displayed at home.
Some are framed on desks. Others sit on bookshelves or are tucked into memory boxes alongside photographs from the day.
I love hearing these stories because it means the artwork continues to remind people of the wedding long after the flowers have wilted and the decorations have been packed away.
That’s something I don’t take for granted.
Why I keep coming back to weddings
Every wedding is different. Different venues, different families, different stories.
But one thing stays remarkably consistent.
People genuinely appreciate receiving something made especially for them.
As artists, we spend the day focused on drawing each portrait as accurately and beautifully as we can. Yet the moments I remember most aren’t always the paintings themselves.
They’re the smiles, the surprised expressions, the conversations that start around my table, and the quiet “thank you” as someone walks away holding a portrait they’ll hopefully treasure for years to come.
Those are the moments that remind me why I love being a live wedding illustrator.
