Hiring a Live Illustrator in Singapore: Everything You Need to Know Before Booking
Event entertainment comes in many forms, from elaborate performances to small, thoughtful experiences that quietly become some of the most memorable parts of the day. More couples today are choosing interactive experiences that allow guests to be part of the celebration, rather than simply watching it unfold.
One of those experiences is live illustration.
As a live illustrator based in Singapore, I’ve had the opportunity to illustrate weddings, corporate events and private celebrations. Along the way, I’ve noticed many couples asking the same questions before deciding whether live illustration is the right fit for their event.
This guide covers everything you need to know before hiring a live illustrator in Singapore.
What is a Live Illustrator?
A live illustrator creates personalised artwork on-site during an event.
Rather than taking home a generic party favour, guests receive a hand-drawn portrait created especially for them during the celebration.
Depending on the artist, illustrations may be created using:
Watercolour
Ink
Markers
Hand-drawn digital illustration (drawn on an iPad, not AI-generated)
Some artists specialise in guest portraits, while others focus on creating a large artwork of the couple, venue or ceremony. Many studios including Bycraft offer both.
Every artist has a unique drawing style and workflow, so it’s worth looking through their portfolio before making a booking.
Why Hire a Live Illustrator for Your Event?
Unlike many forms of wedding entertainment, live illustration leaves guests with something meaningful they can keep long after the celebration.
Guests enjoy watching the artwork come to life, while also receiving a personalised keepsake that reflects their time at your wedding or event. Many couples and brands choose live illustration because it combines:
Interactive entertainment
Personalised wedding favours
A memorable guest experience
Original artwork created during the celebration
It’s both entertainment and a meaningful gift.
What Can a Live Illustrator Create?
Depending on your event, a live illustrator can create different types of artwork.
Live Guest Portraits
Quick personalised sketches created throughout the event and gifted to guests. These are popular for weddings, corporate events, brand activations, appreciation dinners and private celebrations.
Feature Artwork
A larger artwork created during the event, such as:
A wedding ceremony or reception
A venue or event space
A product launch or brand activation
A company milestone celebration
A meaningful moment from the event
Some clients choose to combine guest portraits with a feature artwork for a complete experience.
Paper vs Digital Live Illustrations
Different artists offer different formats.
Traditional Paper Illustrations
Hand-drawn using markers or ink on premium paper. At Bycraft, we typically illustrate on 6 × 4-inch cards before placing each artwork into a protective sleeve so guests can safely bring them home.
Hand-Drawn Digital Illustrations
These are illustrated live on an iPad and are completely hand-drawn, not AI-generated. Guests usually receive the finished artwork digitally after the event, although printed versions can also be arranged.
Both options require a similar amount of time, so choosing between them usually depends on the experience you’d like your guests to have.
Events You Can Hire a Live Illustrator For
Although weddings remain the most popular, live illustration is suitable for many occasions, including:
Weddings & ROM ceremonies
Corporate events & gala dinners
Brand activations
Product launches
Client appreciation events
Awards ceremonies
Birthday celebrations
Engagement parties
Bridal showers
Anniversary celebrations
Community events
Festivals & public events
Live illustration creates an engaging experience wherever people gather.
How Does Live Guest Illustration Work?
Every artist has a slightly different workflow. At Bycraft, our process is designed to minimise waiting while allowing guests to enjoy the celebration.
Our typical process includes:
We arrive around 30 minutes before the event for setup.
Guests register using a QR code.
An on-site assistant helps take reference photos (included with our wedding packages).
Guests continue enjoying the celebration while we illustrate their portraits.
Portraits are completed according to the registration order.
Guests collect their artwork before leaving, or receive digital files after the event if applicable.
If additional illustrations remain after the event, these are completed afterwards and delivered within approximately one week.
How to Choose the Right Live Illustrator in Singapore?
Before booking, consider these questions:
Is every portrait drawn by hand?
Do you prefer traditional or digital illustrations?
How many guests can realistically be illustrated?
Is an assistant included?
Are protective sleeves or packaging provided?
Can the illustration style be customised for your wedding?
Are additional artists available if needed?
Every illustrator has their own artistic style, so choose someone whose portfolio reflects the experience and keepsake you’re looking for.
Whether you’re planning a wedding, corporate function, product launch or private celebration, live illustration offers a meaningful way to entertain your guests while giving them a personalised keepsake to take home.
If you’re looking to hire a live illustrator in Singapore, we’d be happy to help you find a setup that suits your event, guest count and timeline.
